Evolution of the Anchor River Channel

The channel of the Anchor River has meandered across its floodplain considerably in recent years.

The two aerial photos show the same section of the Anchor river taken 10 years apart, in 1996 at top and in 2006 at bottom. One can see the path of the river channel shifted dramatically within that period. The western side of the river channel shown in red in 1996 meandered across its floodplain creating highly curved loops, as well as cut off loops called oxbow lakes. Subsequently, a significant flood occurred which cut off many of those loops in the river channel, wiping out mature tree stands and a large part of our neighbors extended yard.

In the center of the image, the new flood channel began cutting into the outside riverbank, growing loops again with the gravel and sand point bar growing out across the floodplain where trees and vegetation had been established.
